Doodle 28...Play with Pigs

For the record, this is not actually a doodle, but one of (what will soon be) many illustrations for a children's book. I hope I'm not breaking any publishing rules by showing it, but since this site gets all of 5 visitors a week, I'm probably ok.
My good friend Andy decided he wanted to write a children's book and he knew I was into the illustration business and so he approached me about doing the drawings. If he were most other people I'd of said "I'm just too busy," but he's young and I don't want to be discouraging to him doing something worthwhile. I am optimistic about the quality of the book, but I'm not unrealistic about the actual prospects of publishing and being a large commercial success. Time will tell. Thanks for checking in!

Doodle 27 - Monster Guy

Monster Guy...totally not Mike Wazowski from Monster's Inc. Totally not. Well, I just sort of doodled this guy and it just happens we watched Pixar's Monster's Inc. recently, so whatever, I'm influenced by my environment from time to time. Maybe this is Mike's brother or something like that.
I know I've not lived up to the blogs intention of being a daily thing, but sooner or later time will fall out of the sky and I will be able to lots of things I always wanted to do. Or perhaps I should just rename it. At any rate, thanks for following along. I hope you are enjoying what does show up here and wish you all the best!

Doodle 26 - Sad Dragon

Oh dang, months later a new doodle? Someting must be up. I was not sad when I drew this, but it makes me sad looking at him, poor little guy. Luckily the scan didn't pick up the white-out I put on his head. I haven't been drawing much lately...as is often my excuse, time is so short. We're now at 6 kids, but it is a ton of work everyday. I think there is hope for more art soon, or at least I want to believe!

Doodle 25 - Moostache

Police that Moostache!!! is the line from the Sergeant Major in the HBO show "Generation Kill" which inspired this piece. Our team runs around yelling this all the time and it's quite fun. The oversized rank is a reference to my recent promotion. This was a quick assignment to draw something for a coin jar fund raiser. It seemed to be in line with current office events, so I went with it. Hope you enjoy!
In other news, we should be having a baby any day now, just waiting on labor to kick in. It's fantastic having a great little clan of kids and another addition is welcome. Hoping everything goes well.

Happy Halloween

This is proof that I will post again! I know it's terribly long and I am terribly sorry, but on the bright side, Halloween is coming! Inspired by the same, this cute image follows a little monster who is likely going to be eaten by a Jack-o-lantern, who in turn is going to be eaten by the scary tree...everything that makes Halloween great!
OK, now about the whole "daily" word in the title of my blog, it is more of a target than a deadline. I think it's been a month or more since my last post (I'm afraid to look) but I promise one thing, anything that does finally make in, will be quality work. See exhibit A, the Halloween themed image on the left.
Let's get real for a minute...Can you even imagine the pain I feel, the longing, the yearning to post great, fun drawings everyday, whilst I am awash in so many other things that I simply don't have the time? It's rough, and if I could choose anything, it would be you. And by you, I mean art and by art I mean the blog as an extension of art. I am supposed to link to my sister's blog, but darned if I can remember what it is. I'll have to call her. Anyway, love you, wish you the best.

Doodle 23 - Fish

Fish...is neither creative nor funny, but it is done and post-able, so BAM here it is! I looked back at my doodles and so far most of them are genius! A handful are strange and a few are common or non-creative, but I enjoy the process as a whole.
I always wanted to be a celebrated artist, in demand, admired by all, and so on, but at some point I thought it would be best to pursue art as a passionate side-bar instead. I likely would never have taken a job in the Marine Corps or Air Force if I had dedicated myself to illustration and in that respect I would have missed a great many benefits I now enjoy. I may never have gotten a college education or been just a few credits from my Masters. All in all I can't help but recognize the many good things that have come from the choices I've made, but somewhere in the back of my skull is the never dying question, could I have made this my living...I think yes! I probably still could, but that would require a great shift in the structure of my life at present. On that note, I have an incredible idea for a science fiction novel centered around a device that creates ghosts...but not like you think, way different. More on that later.

Doodle 22 - Family of Spooks

It has been way too long! Sorry to everyone for not having something fun up everyday, (as promised in the title) but it's been for good reason. I won't get into it, but let's just say I'm glad to be back at it.
I had a simple idea in mind here of seeing what I could do with some basic shapes and variations in simple characters to create a range of emotional projections. The mommy Spook is so proud of her little spooks trying so hard to be scary, even baby spook makes an appearance.
Halloween is approaching here in the next month and the stores are already packing in the goods. I guess that just triggers something in my mind. I've often enjoyed halloween themed drawings and back in high school I actually painted the outside of a haunted house with my art teacher. Very fun thing to do, but it wasn't that good a paint job, in my opinion. I don't think I got paid to do it either.
Here's hoping I get back to the daily part of this daily blog!

I'm getting a little into the black and white. I penciled this very little before heading to the pen. I worked it slightly more than I should have so it's overdone just a bit. I let my kids art direct me, so you can credit them for the butterfly and the leaves. He's supposed to be an old stump, that keeps on going in a positive way despite the age.

Doodle 19 - Wind Blown Proof

Wind Blown

This is less a doodle than a mathematical proof. The Law of Large Numbers suggests that if an experiment is run enough times, eventually the results will approach the expected value and the average of the results will be closer and closer to the true mean. In this proof here, the true mean is pure weirdness and since we're approaching 20 doodles, the average is starting to show through, despite my best efforts.
A couple questions that need to be answered:
What the?
I get it's some kind of windy scene, but nothing else seems to make sense, what's going on?
You had the pencils done and could clearly see what the drawing was...Why did you put ink to this?
The answer is, I don't know, it just seemed to keep going. Anyway, hope there is at least some humor from it for you. It does have a nice watch though.

Doodle 18 - Monster Momma

Monster Momma

Something new! It's been a while and this is a good one to wait for. I penciled this weeks ago, but just couldn't get around to finishing it until now. Inspired by a true story...this is sort of an homage to my own bride, who so beautifully cares for a small army of little ones and is working to bring another into the world in a few months. She is captivatingly attractive with her baby belly and seemingly endless tasks to accomplish.

The drawing had some spots I wanted to change up, but I was too late. It works well, but could have been a bit better with some more robust planning. It was fairly detailed, so clicking the image might be a good idea, to see the bigger size.
The fuzzy one is supposed to be the pet, but I was thinking it could also be another kid. If it was another kid, I should have made each of them different looking, whereas now they are all goblin-ish, except the "dog." I couldn't decide on how best to set them in space. I toyed with adding some grass or a floor behind them, to give a sense of position, but it just didn't sit well and I left them hanging on in the nether region. I think it would make a nice addition to the coloring book though.
I am awaiting Adobe's approval for CS5, which I bought on the student discount. You have to submit proof of being a student before they will do the transaction. Once I get it, I'll be able to create the coloring book pages the way they are supposed to be. I've also seen Photoshop has some crazy new features that are quite impressive. I look forward to messing with that. Don’t forget to share the blog with friends and family and other locals.

Doodle 17 - Wise Teddy or Teddy Won Kanobi

As with Doodle 16, this isn't actually new, but I just think it fits in too well to deny it a place on this blog. I was not as pleased with the results from this experiment. As I recall, the drawing was pretty void so I wanted to make him look furry. Some of that was achieved, but it darkened him up a lot more than I intended. I like the walking stick though. The blotchy pattern on it, was something Zak and I developed back in the day of Tofu comics, which I wish I had held onto. Each issue was basically a preview for issues to come, which doesn't captivate readers very well, but I loved selling them to high schoolers for a $1 and trying my hand at comic creation.

Doodle 16 - Space Eye

Space Eye

I'm only cheating a little by posting this, since some of the picture is new. I was experimenting with the use of pen when I created this. Turns out some pens and better on some papers and vice versa, but that all still needs to be worked out.

But who cares about the art talk, let's talk feelings...I realized, not too long ago that being yourself, does not mean being selfish. In fact, if we really understand the true nature of life, the very opposite comes out. Selfishness is self-defeating behavior; a self-deception, which ignores the neccissary contribution for continued life provided by others, the environment, and the divine. I am convinced that the actual path to being yourself is selfless.
Now as for the art, the textural experiment here really made me happy. One of the things I have trouble with is using too much black, or having too little definition in a pen and ink drawing, for fear of unintentionally ruining the drawing. This drawing was a big step forward for me. I do admit, this isn't "new" so I apologize, once again I did not meet the intention of the blog...forgive me!

Doodle 15 - Little J. Football

For this picture I was working on a series of images that were steriotypes for my own children. I've got one little boy who is super active (not hyper) and moves with everything he does. He used to be into sports of any kind, but I think as time goes on he's more into just being active all the time.
Anyway, back when this was sketched he was big into sports, including football, so that was the theme.
I don't think I would encourage him to go into Football. Not because I think ill of football, but because he's not a large kid and he'd probably have more fun doing basketball, soccer, or swimming, or anything that keeps the players moving.

Doodle 14 - Irrational Fear

Irrational Fear

"Some fears are rational and some are irrational." That line was taken from Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. I really enjoyed the movie they made from it, one of my daughter's favorites for a while.
I really liked this drawing. I think it may have been a little stronger before I added the pen and made it strickly black and white, but it's still fun. I wanted the expression to be a little more afraid, but I didn't get it. I toyed with the idea of placing some kind of pattern on the umbrella, but couldn't get something I liked. I wish I had drawn it with four or more panels showing so I could alternate black and white, but with only three it didn't lend itself to the alternating colors.
So, here we have a clearly water based creature, who is afraid of getting wet in the rain. To me it's an analogy of a real characteristic we often have of limiting our opportunities for fear of things that really are no threat at all. It likely lies in our forgetting who we are, what we are capable of, erroring on the side of caution when, if we explored the environment a little bit we would find a place to thrive. To be successful, know who you are and where you fit, what is a danger and what is not.

Doodle 13 - Baseball Walking

Baseball Walking

Baseball Walking - Had a hot second yesterday and drew this guy up. He had a Mohawk and big glasses for a while, but I dropped them, because they didn't seem to fit. I added the stitches after that and thought he looked like a baseball. The stitching was supposed to make him look like a stuffed animal type thing, but it didn't happen that way.
I finished my most recent Master Course on Monday night, so hopefully that means more sleep (averaging 5-6 hrs a night is getting to me) as well as a little time for some doodling.
In other news, I've gotten 40 of 120 ACEO cards uploaded over at http://tylerscards.blogspot.com/
It takes a good minute to add a post, so it's taking longer than I expected it would. I really liked doing the cards, wish I had the time today that I did at Utah State.

Doodle - '08

It still counts even though it was done in 2008, right? I mean come on, when the drawing was complete I titled it, "Doodle." You've got to cut me a little slack, work has been insanely busy lately, we've got 50% of 10 kids at home and this week I need to write a final paper for my college class.
Now that you're all feeling very sympathetic, enjoy this little drawing from yesteryear. I like each of the elements independently, like the wings, the girl, the lizard, the flowers, but together it just feels like forced randomness. I needed something to tie them together. While the lizard and bird share eye contact, it just seem insincere somehow, like they are in the picture, but not sure what to do with each other and they know the artist is about to take the shot, so they pose for it, but they don't really belong. That's what I see in this. The girl has wings, but why, she's wearing a sweater, does the sweater come with wings, or are they hers? Who bought all these flowers anyway? How much dd they cost? Why are they around everything, but touching nothing? Final review, I think it was a wonderfully executed piece (the pencil is fantastic) of misaligned characters and elements...good thing it was years ago, right.

Doodle ? - Dual Dragons

Ok, it's not new, but I figure few enough have seen it, that it's worth posting here. This was actually some artwork done for one of my Art Cards and one of my personal favorites, but ironically enough it never sold! So I think I still have the original sitting in a briefcase.
The drawing is intended to show a state of mutual hostility between the two dragons, who are opposites. While hostile, they are also passive in their positioning, meaning they are against the other presence, but unable, or unwilling to be the one to break the barrier to actual contact and physicality. Each is tempting the other to cross the line while refusing to do so themselves. If we want to dig deeper, it's a metaphor for each of us, who possess something of the divine and something of the natural man, these two forces are in conflict, but never seem to be able to totally supplant the other.

Doodle 12 - Dark Fish

So named because it ended up pretty dark. It didn't start dark, but in the end I think 3 or 4 pens were involved as well as some white out. I just kept working it until it ended up where it is. I think it came off OK, but I still need some better inspiration. This might be the first non-fun drawing on the blog. I doodled an excellent "humorous and 'awe' inspiring" drawing days ago, but need to finish it. I'll hopefully post it next time. I'm exploring the pen and ink lately, you may have noticed. I'm also a day behind, but if I count weekdays only, then we're doing great!

Doodle 11 - Broken Arm Champ

Broken Arm Champion

This piece is totally inspired by my son, who broke his arm this last week (awe....), but who was also as excited as Chirstmas Day when he got his bright red cast on. He was running down the hall acting like it was some kind of new Mega Man shooting gun arm that made him invincible and completely awesome. It was very cute to watch his excitement. His enthusiasm has since worn off, because the reality of an itchy, heavy, pokey, non-removable cast has sunk in.
I think one of the best parts of being a parent is witnessing the joy of your kids when they get into something they think is really cool. Hopefully I captured some of that here.
Again, I went with ink...it's a phase I'm sure, but I do like it. When I get my act together I'll finish putting the coloring book online, so you can print pages out for your kids...or yourself.

Lizard's are Suckers

Second to be born of the stack of old unfinished masterpieces. I went a little further on exploring the textures and use of the pen here than the previous one. Again the pencil drawing had little to go off, just a quick doodle. That reminds me of some of my other pieces that I drew in pen only, I should dig them out and post here as well. I can't remember if I ever added them to my other online portfolios.

Doodle 9 - Beauty

I dug into my old briefcases today and found a stack of unfinished (some exceptionally awesome) drawings. I pulled a handful out because they would be easy to finish and this was the first of those. It was a rough thin pencil sketch and I threw down the inks to bring it to life. I experimented with the textures a little (the circles on the skin, the ribs, the tail lines, etc.) to see what I could do with just raw ink. Usually I will flesh out a drawing in pencil until the ink is a mere application and not something to create with. Here I had little guidance from the pencil side, so I had to bring in what I could, but it's risky because ink is unforgiving.
Often I'm asked why I have a stack (literally hundreds) of unfinished drawings sitting around. Well, my simple answer is this, not every drawing deserves to be finished. Some due to lack of success, lack of time, lack of emotional connection, lack of enthusiasm, or because it was never created to be finished; it was destined to be just a sketchy little guy next to several other sketchy little guys of slightly different orientation. Also, time...it takes time and I don't often have time to go back and correct errors in earlier work.

Football Pride

Today brings us two drawings for the price of one. (Must be a Groupon thing) Mostly because I cheated a little. These aren't "new" drawings in the sense that I just barely created them for the blog, but they are new in the sense that no one has seen them before.
One of my most popular images (based on number of emails from people requesting to use it at no cost) was the football player I drew in high school. Not long ago this also led to a commissioned drawing for the Oregon State Beavers www.beaverfootball.com You'll notice they use the logo in many places. The full image is awesome, but they crop it to fit the different areas of the site. Anyway, after drawing that logo I was in the zone as far as football themed artwork and so I drew these two guys up. I looked around for a buyer, but so far no one has snatched up the printing rights from me (be the first!). I also didn't post it to any of my other sites.
This type of image is quite possibly my favorite to draw and favorite to look at. I love the black and white, the absence of expression, the massive, manly, strong, and slightly scary persona that football is often associated with. If I had time to do a series of 100 like these I probably would. They are fun to make and to see, for me anyway. Hope you enjoy as well.

Doodle 7 - Turtle Neck

Turtle Neck

There are fewer things in life better than the expressive nature of turtle drawings. I had the pun turtle neck in my head and thought, what a silly drawing that would make. And BAM! here it is. Again, the powers of the "One Sketchbook" had me drawing away losing myself to its mystery.
The real issue here, is the drastic difference between pen and pencil when you define the objects and shades. With pencil you have the option for so many gradients and patterns, whereas pen is line and white space. I love both, but switching between them is proving difficult, and fun.

Rosey, the flower girl was another product of the most ominous and mystic sketch book known to man. (See Doodle 4) The more I use it, the more precious it is to me...but it's also sending me back into the realm of pencil, since pen and ink just doesn't suit the paper well. I don't mind and unless I get numerous complaints, it will likely continue.

Gloopey Enthusiasm

You knew it was only a matter of time before a little monster made of mud was going to appear on here and you were right. It’s a recurring theme of mine. Mud men are fun to make with all the little gloops, glops and such. Black and White is back as well and I think I will add most of these pen and ink pieces to the coloring book. If I get my act together you’ll be able to order coloring books from this blog sooner or later, or least link to somewhere that you can. Speaking of the coloring book, I sold a handful of the first addition, but I’ve added a lot since then, so even if you scored one early, you should know it’s better now than ever. If you haven’t gotten a coloring book, you’re missing something amazing (mass order discounts are certanly available). When in doubt just email me.

I don’t have much art-wise to say about this one. I kept it simple, clean and fun. I was going for an enthusiastic expression to contrast the nature of the subject. You might think someone made of mud would have a sour or “muddy” disposition, but not so my friend. The drawing makes me want to take a next step and follow up with something more complex.

Hugs are like Lemonade - Best Fresh Squeezed

Forgive the abundance of sappiness and just think how cute a greeting card that makes. I do recall as a young man, fresh from high school applying for a job at American Greetings and Hallmark. Both decided my lack of experience and schooling did not constitute a solid candidate for employment...their loss for sure. I am truly a butter heart though (softy) and I've always enjoyed the little illustrations of romantic sentiment. I also seem to be quite good at crafting images that to me bring out an emotional memory.

I did an entire series of sweetheart type art back in the day, mostly because I was SUPER shy and the girl I totally liked paid me no mind (sigh), so I drew little romantic scenes in lieu of actually overcoming insecurities and shyness. Still serves as some fond memories and lessons learned.

Good Gordon, is that pencil!!! Yes, I broke from my pen and ink phase for a day and doodled this one in pencil. I blame it on the type of paper I was using. I found a sketch book tucked away in the upper rooms of my mansion. This sketch book was forged in the fires of Mount Doom and has upon its pages some of the finest etchings by the great artists of our generation (Zak and Joe and me). I had to use it, I had to; its power was just too great. The paper was best suited for pencil and not ink, so I stuck with it.

I am a big fan of pencil work, love the shading, the detail, the sharpness of the lines, the freedom to erase, the rendering power and so on. If I was in greater practice with pencil I would likely have included some better shading, but I’m very accustomed to line art as of late.

Doodle 3 - Grampy Dragon

I went again with the black and white format for this. I do have a choice, since all drawings begin as pencil. I have to judge whether or not I want to flesh it out in pencil, which always looks good but can take a greater amount of time, or take the road less traveled and convert to pen and ink. Even after the pen is done, I can go back and add more with the pencil, though I rarely do. Black and white is very well suited for logo design, T-shirts and so on, so I don’t like to mix in pencil often (ignore Doodle 2). I do love pencil, but I’m in an “ink phase” at the moment, so just stay with me and we’ll see pencil work come back out sooner or later.

Wrinkles are so fun to make. One because you can cover up any mistake in the drawing with a few lines and then claim it was supposed to be like that. Two, because old people are beautiful and by association old monsters are too. His eyes tell of an absence of threat and his smile is cute and harmless. I went with the big dopey ears, but debated a little on that. The tail was added to give a better balance to the overall figure, as well as signify that he was a dragon, or monster, and not something else. The hands and feet are supposed to point to an arthritic body.

In his younger days perhaps he was a more dangerous and threatening sort, but years of aches, pains and being forced to slow down have taken all the fight out of him, until all that’s really left is a friend. I’m starting to sound a little sappy here, so I’ll stop.

It’s always an interesting and telling exercise to examine my own drawings and reflect on what story I would attach to the image, which I‘m certain is different than what you might say.

Doodle 2 - Teddy Flight

Teddy Flight

What wonder are the pens and pencils all around us!

This beauty is the result of doodling away while sitting near a pile of pens and pencils at someplace (not-work). The medium is pencil (shading), black pen, blue pen, red pen and a highlighter. I wanted to add some color so I used blue over the already complete black and white. It still felt a little empty though. The red pen was useful for the feeling of background and overall adding playful color to the piece. I also felt really good about the scribble-like flow when adding the texture. Finally the wings felt empty and since I had no other present color choice, the highlighter filled them in.

The subject of a winged teddy bear was…more just an expression of what sits in my head. When I start going at a blank paper there is always an inherit risk that a teddy bear will soon appear on the page. It’s not deliberate, but about the basic shapes, circle head, circle ears, circle body, no fingers/toes, short limbs, etc. The whole concept is rooted in the basic structures that make up most other artwork. I wouldn’t rate this as my best drawing ever, but I would say it’s enjoyable to look at, and was enjoyable to create.

Doodle 1 - Stinky Beep

Stinky Beep Concept Drawing

Stinky Beep, for whatever reason, is the most hilarious of subjects to me. Just saying his name makes me laugh. After coming up with the concept I explained it to my kids and they loved it. His name was partly my fault and partly the inspiration of my oldest daughter. I can’t resist his childlike charms. I’ve only drawn a few concepts of the character, but this one captures what I’m looking for very well. Simple, cute, silly, likeable and fun to say.

Basically, Stinky Beep was born from my many years of desire to create a fun, non-educational, children’s book that was outlandishly fun for me to make. It would also be nice if it was just as fun to read. When I sat down to finally write the words, I threw out any reservations on my writing style and thought “just write what you would want to read.” I’ve worked over the script a few times and it stands at a good 10-15 pages, one to two sentences per page. As I begin to get into this blogging world I am optimistic about pushing to finally complete the first book. I am planning to release to a publisher (call me…no really, call me) or publish by myself on Kindle, or other eReader. I’m not real concerned about it becoming a money maker, (publishers should ignore that last line) but who cares, he’s fun, funny and very cute and reminds me of the sweet simple comedy that is life.

This drawing is him after his fateful transformation. The beard, tank wheels and scuba mask are all results of his experimentation with his mysterious powers that manifest themselves when he eats different things. I don’t want to spoil the entire first book (which isn’t that much more complex) so I’ll stop there.

I’ve taken to the pen and ink style lately, over my traditional love of pencil work. I really like what can be done with line thickness to express further character. I also love the ability of black to fill out a drawing and make it feel more solid.
